In 1882, the French thinker Ernest Renan gave a lecture at the Sorbonne in Paris titled What is a Nation?. He said: “The nations are not something eternal. They had their beginnings and they will end. A European confederation will very probably replace them. But such is not the law of the century in which we are living.”
