30 Movements

2022 – 2024 • Anita Wach

Performer – a fool on the playground of reality

30 Movements is a series of performative responses to a series of public events that shape and define conventional reality. Created over the course of two years, the performative gestures are the result of an effort to clearly present ideas in the context of socio-political events and follow a logic that prioritises the meaning of an action over its aesthetic form.

Topics, contexts, places, spaces, institutions, collaborators, genres, durations – everything flows fluidly, forming an orbit of 30 different “gestures” in a semantic network of 30 sentences. These are almost profane quotations from thinkers, politicians, artists, etc., gathered from all corners of the globe and all historical periods, which serve as an argumentative crutch and anchor for the gesture of the project. The basic motive of these “movements” is the need for a creative breakthrough and the formation of the artistic self-appearance of the contemporary performer.

The whole project is conceived as a continuous demonstration of a performing body – a performer playing the role of a contemporary court buffoon, the so-called ‘licensed fool’. As a jester, Anita and her collaborators take on the role of commentators on the playground of reality, becoming an obstacle on the street, an intruder in public space, an unpredictable object in an art gallery, a mistake in the theatre, a pervert in the park … With a group of collaborators, she creates a collection of “drifting appearances on the currents of reality”: the naked among the clothed, the exposed among the hidden, the loud among the quiet – the crazy among the sane.

30 Movements project is a direct confrontation between the artist and reality – a confrontation and, at the same time, the destruction of an artist who refuses to become a servant of the cultural market and the pragmatism of “realkultur” and, at the same time, remains a visible actor in it, claiming her place in the system. To this end, the performer strives at all costs to remain a systemic anomaly, a distortion of reality, an epiphany and a celebration of her consistent uselessness in the marketplace of unstable ideologies.
