On 8 February (Slovenian cultural holiday), two foreigners read from Prešeren – the greatest Slovenian poet, the father of national consciousness and a doomed romantic. It is a day dedicated to the celebration of culture, the fuel that drives the national monster. The two foreigners break their tongues and strain their linguistic apparatus in order to approach the Slovenian language and its imaginary horizon. Their stammering, mispronunciations and distorted words amuse the linguistically superior locals to a great extent. Language once again emerges as both a link and a barrier.
