Taste of Being
Olja Grubić
The language spoken by all living beings
Food is an ideological field manifesting the friction between different peoples, cultures, subcultures, generations, families, genders, etc. Pierre Bordieu says that “taste must be understood as a social phenomenon. Taste is not the result of individual choice, it is a social creation.” As part of culture, food inscribes itself in our bodies and leaves its mark on them. It becomes part of our identity as we go through the eating process. Food speaks about our national and cultural identity, expresses our social position, our religious beliefs, etc. Eating behaviour is largely instinctive and unconscious, and often says a lot about us that we are not even aware of. Food is a language that is understood by all people, from all social backgrounds, cultures and nationalities. Food is a language spoken by all living beings.
