Either you’re in the game or you don’t exist

The band has split up, but there has to be a gig. The backing vocalists recognise their chance to step to the fore. They have the talent, they have the guts and they have the greatest hits programme. Even though there is nothing left to follow, the two vocalists step on an empty stage and perform their programme professionally from start to finish: Time is on my side, Respect, Freedom, Children of the revolution, Power to the people, I feel free, Nothing’s gonna stop us now… The concert is just a shell, driven by the memory of what it was meant to be. There is no one left to give substance to this shell of opportunity and freedom. And yet, to the end, they maintain their phantom projection of life’s opportunity. Either you’re in the game or you don’t exist.
