The gluttony of the gaze

Food in the form of various food products represents a basic set of props that performers use in situations in which they reveal their own gluttony or to perform their defence against it. With the help of these foodstuffs, which are displayed on the stage, the audience, guided by invited moderators, selects and combines the performers’ actions into a performative event structured purely by the curiosity of the audience. The moderators of the performances are usually more or less popular presenters of various television or radio programmes who, in their distinctive style, encourage the audience to accept their role in a performance about gluttony and to participate in the choice of food. Their task on this evening is the same as for any other show – to keep the show running smoothly and without unnecessary embarrassment.
