Article 2
(Goals of education)
The goals of primary education are:
– to provide quality general education to the whole population;
– to promote the harmonious physical, cognitive, emotional, moral, spiritual and social development of the individual, taking into account the laws of development;
– to facilitate the personal development of the pupil in accordance with his/her abilities and interests, including the development of a positive self-image;
– the acquisition of the capacity for further education and careers, with an emphasis on competence for lifelong learning;
– education for sustainable development and for active participation in a democratic society, including a deeper knowledge of and responsible attitude towards oneself, one’s health, other people, one’s own and other cultures, the natural and social environment, future generations;
– developing awareness of national belonging and national identity, knowledge of the history of Slovenians, their cultural and natural heritage, and promoting civic responsibility;
– education for the common values of culture and civilisation, rooted in the European tradition;
– education for respect and cooperation, acceptance of differences and mutual tolerance, respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms;
– developing literacy and discernment in the areas of text, science and technology, mathematics, information, social sciences and the arts;
– developing literacy and the ability to understand and communicate in the Slovene language and, in areas defined as ethnically mixed, in Italian and Hungarian;
– developing the ability to communicate in foreign languages;
– developing an awareness of the complexity and interdependence of phenomena and the critical power of judgement;
– achieving internationally comparable standards of knowledge;
– developing talent and training to understand and experience works of art and to express oneself in different artistic fields;
– developing entrepreneurship as a personal orientation towards effective action, innovation and creativity of the learner.
