The central driving force of the performance is the silent presence of the spectator, his expectation, his gaze, his immobility. This is a perfectly normal and self-evident relationship between performer and spectator. But in Eric Dean Scott’s performance, the presence of the spectators is not a given, but a mistake, for which he finds himself completely unprepared. It’s all the fault of the phantom Sergei, to whom Eric is talking on the phone: “Sergei, there are people here! What are they doing here? Nobody should be here but me. They just sit here and wait. It’s like a waiting room. What are they waiting for, who are they waiting for?
