Jaka Lah

Actor, performer

He enrolled at the AGRFT in 1999, having previously studied Sociology of Culture and Slovenian Language and Literature at the Faculty of Philosophy in Ljubljana. In 2001, he won the Sever Prize; in 2003, the Academy’s Prešeren Prize for performance Everyone sees his own face in solitude. In 2010, he graduated with a Master’s in Drama. His thesis was entitled Art between the premonition of meaning and the metamorphosis of its absence. He started working at the Ljubljana City Theatre straight after graduating and has been collaborating with the Via Negativa platform since the end of his studies. He took part in Tanja Zgonc’s Butoh project Koora, which won the Dance Critics’ Choice Award in 2002. He has appeared in several short films and acted in Vinko Möderndorfer’s feature film Pokrajina št. 2.

Jaka belongs to those theatre actors who keep their acquired academic knowledge at a distance and cannot be satisfied with just one theatre territory (a certain institution, aesthetics, genre…). That is why, in addition to his work as a member of the ensemble of the Ljubljana City Theatre (MGL), he has been fascinated by some dance paradigms (butō) and contemporary performance art. In the Via Negativa projects, he stands out for his subtle, unburdened and highly studied performance, where his “realistic” tendencies push him beyond the narrative axis into absurdly radicalised situations.
