Katarina Stegnar

Actress, performer

Graduated from AGRFT in 2002. Since 2004 she has been collaborating with the Via Negativa platform. She is a member of Betontanc and its spin-off, the collective Beton Ltd. She collaborates with institutional and independent theatres, in 2014 she joined the Slovenian Youth Theatre. In 2007 she won the Veljko Maričić Award for the best young actress at the International Festival of Small Stages in Rijeka, and in 2005 the Golden Bird Award. In 2017, together with the collective of the performance The Man Who Watched the World, she received the Borštnik Award for Acting, and in 2016 the Prešeren Fund Award. She has also acted in several prominent roles on film, including in the movie The Tree ( 2014).

With her creations, Katarina has made a noticeable mark on Slovenian contemporary performance arts. In her Via Negativa performances, she has created a space for conceptually consistent and innovative performance, which is characterised by research, raising controversial topics, searching for new, alternative forms of presentation and critical reflection on her own creative work and the medium in which she expresses herself. As a performer, she is constantly developing and deepening both the performative and the referential component and is relentless both towards herself and her audience.
